Allergies
The immune
system works 24 hours a day seven days a week to assure that
there are no foreign substances or invasion of your body. This
includes anything from splinters, dust, bacteria, drugs,
tumors and abnormalities. There are even attacks on transplant
organs that the body detects and determines to be foreign to its
original nature. A healthy immune system would mean that there
is a high and strong resistance to sickness and disease, an unhealthy
immune system would mean susceptibility to sickness and even death
in some cases. Take AIDS patients for example, their immune
system is deteriorated, which makes them a perfect host for germs
and environmental attacks, leading to death.
Immunological Disease
If the immune system were
to malfunction it would be unable to fight off invasion of
disease and germs, and in some cases the
body may even begin to attack itself. Some examples of
immunological disease are:
- Cancer, when the tumor is not recognized as something that
needs to be destroyed.
- Rheumatoid
Arthritis, when the immune system attacks the joints.
- AIDS, when the immune system is severely depressed and unable
to fight.
- Anaphylaxis, when the body has a powerful overreaction to foreign
substances such as bee stings, penicillin,
drugs, and foods.
- Obscure Disease such as lupus, erythematosus, myasthenia gravis,
scleroderma, pernicious anemia, and chronic thyroiditis.
- Allergies
Allergens and Allergies
An allergen is a substance
that causes an allergic reaction. When
the body reacts to the allergen the immune
system over-reacts and produces too much neutralizing chemicals
for the counteraction of the allergen. Examples of allergens
are:
- Pollen
- Dust
- Medicines
- Dog or Cat dander
- Milk
- Soaps
- Detergents
- Kitchen Chemicals
- Foods
A common allergen is ragweed
pollen, which causes hay fever. Most
people go un bothered by these microscopic bits of plant, while
other have immune
systems that over-react to the point of causing runny eyes
irritated mucus membranes, redness, pounding headaches,
full sinuses,
and runny nose.
What Causes Allergies?
The actual cause for this over-reaction
of the immune
system is in debate, however many professionals in the healing
field believe that there is a direct correlation between vaccinations
and the proliferation of allergies and other immune
system disease and dysfunction.
The Medical Approach
There is only medical
treatment for allergies; there is no known cure. Medicines are used, and may sometimes be more
dangerous to the body than the actual allergy itself. Inmost
cases, it is evident that the reason for the allergy is not located,
but the medication is administered to mask the symptoms.
Antihistamines
The overreaction to allergens causes the body to release
histamines. The histamines are the chemicals that cause swelling
and allergy symptoms. This is counteracted with antihistamines
in the medical field. These drugs reduce the symptoms but
do not correct the overreaction of the immune system, making the
patient dependant on the drugs to cope. In some cases steroid
hormones are used. Antihistamines and steroid hormones have
many side effects, and their long-term use is unknown.
Allergy Shots
Allergy shots are another form of desensitization of allergy
symptoms. These shots are frequently used, and their long-term
effects are unknown.
Breast Feeding
Studies show that babies
that are breast fed have fewer allergy problems than babies that
are reliant on formula. Breast
milk contains colostrum, a substance that helps to strengthen the
immune system. Babies that are formula-fed have a much higher
instance of infection than those that are breast fed.
Vertebral Subluxations
Misaligned vertebrae
that interfere with the nervous system and cause nerve stress
are called vertebral
subluxations. This interference interrupts the information
and energy flow to the various parts of the body and lowers our
natural resistance to sickness and disease. Chiropractors
are trained to locate and correct vertebral
subluxation through examination and spinal
adjustment. The adjustments relieve
the nerve stress and assist in restoration of body function. Proper
functioning of the nervous system through chiropractic treatment
is one of the best defenses against disease and dysfunction.
The Chiropractic Approach
Chiropractic is
not a treatment for allergies, however spinal nerve stresses damage
the nervous system and can lead to disease and disorders of all kinds. It
has been noted that an unhealthy spine impedes the communication
to the body and organs and decreases the effectiveness of the immune
system. Chiropractors locate and free the body from spinal nerve
stress. Studies have shown that there is a direct relationship
between a healthy nervous system and a healthy body. This is
something that all allergy sufferers need to help their bodies be
strong enough to fight the allergies effects. |
