Diabetes

Blood sugar is necessary for life, however too much or too little can cause many health problems, even death.

Diabetes Mellitis (Diabetes)

Diabetes Mellitis, which causes hyperglycemia, is a disease that is separated into several types. A person who suffers from Diabetes is unable to process and use the sugar that they eat. The sugar simply remains in the blood stream and spills over into their urine, while the rest of the body’s tissue and cells are starved of the sugar components that they need to function. This disease is attributed to a pancreas that produces too little insulin, which is the hormone that enables the body to naturally store sugar. In some cases the body becomes resistant to the body’s own insulin and bears the same result.

Type I Diabetes (Insulin Dependent)

The beta cells are being destroyed in people who are Type I Diabetic. These diabetes sufferers may depend on insulin to keep them from wasting away or falling into diabetic coma. These patients are usually underweight, as the body does not metabolize sugar and turn it into fat properly. This type of Diabetes makes up approximately 10% of all diabetics.

Type II Diabetes (Adult Onset Diabetes)

Type II diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, generally affecting those who are overweight and over the age of 40. In addition to the hereditary connection with this form of diabetes, it is felt that it is also attributed to a lifetime of poor eating habits that has exhausted and damaged the insulin producing cells of the pancreas.  Studies have shown that countries with diets low in fat, protein and refined sugars have rare instances of blood sugar problems. Pancreatic disease often found in alcoholics, various medications and steroids are other known causes of diabetes. Type II diabetes is treatable through weight loss, change of diet and exercise. In severe cases insulin is administered.

Prognosis

The onset age of diabetes has a great deal to do with the life expectancy of the patient.  Type I diabetics who develop the disease early on may not live past their 20’s. Cases of Type II diabetes see a longer life expectancy with weight loss, diet and exercise.

Secondary Diabetic Conditions

Diabetics suffer from many secondary conditions associated with the high sugar levels they experience. Circulatory problems, nervous system damage, kidney disease, heart disease and blindness are some of the common secondary conditions seen.

Pregnancy and Diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs in expectant mothers. During pregnancy blood sugar levels rise to meet the needs of the growing baby.  If the mother to be has an unhealthy sugar control system she is prone to develop gestational diabetes. With the sugar control unregulated, the excess sugar will be absorbed by the developing fetus, tending to make it grow larger than normal and impede vaginal delivery. Caffeine has been linked to the development of gestational diabetes, as studies have shown that caffeine’s half-life is prolonged during pregnancy and it may travel to the placenta and have a toxic effect on the pancreatic cells that produce insulin in the fetus.

Medicine offers no cure for diabetes. The condition may only be managed, hoping that it gets no worse.

Chiropractic is not a treatment for diabetes, however diabetics should be examined by a chiropractor to ensure that they are free of spinal nerve stress. Spinal nerve stresses damage the nervous system and can lead to disease of all kinds. Chiropractors locate and free the body from spinal nerve stress. Studies have shown that there is a relationship between a healthy nervous system and a healthy pancreas. Spinal nerve damage in the thoracic area, which feeds the pancreas, has shown higher results of pancreatic damage.
