You
Too Can Achieve Optimal Well Being
- If
you do not have symptoms, you are healthy.
- You
should go to the doctor only when you have symptoms.
- When
your symptoms are gone, you are well.
If you think the answer to any of the above questions
is true, you are grossly misinformed about health.
The citizens of the United
States spend 10% of the countries gross national product on health
care. We have
more hospitals and doctors to serve our population that most countries
in the world. Oddly enough, considering these facts, the United
Nations World Health Organization has rated the United States as
having one of the lowest general health indexes in any of the Industrialized
nations. The general health of most Americans is poor.
Most Americans do not understand
what health is or how to obtain it. The World Health Organization has defined
health as a state of optimum physical, mental and social well-being,
and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.
Most Americans think of
health as having no symptoms, but this is certainly not the case. For example, the first
symptoms of heart disease is usually a heart attack. A person
with heart disease may feel no symptoms, but a silent killer lurks
inside their body.
The medical community has instilled the idea that
health is the removal of symptoms rather than the creation of a potential
environment for the body that makes it function at
100%. Symptoms are the end result of the bodys inability
to perform and function at 100%.
Health can be achieved and maintained when the
emphasis shifts from the removal of symptoms to the creation of optimal
function.
