Legal Battles

The world famous pediatrician Robert Mendelsohn once said that he was taught in medical school not to even associate with a chiropractor. As a result of lawsuits by the chiropractic profession, the American Medical Association began to allow medical doctors to consult with chiropractors.

D.D. Palmer

The founding father of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer, was imprisoned with other practicing chiropractors for healing without the blessing of the medical establishment. These chiropractors were not alone, as the medical profession is not openly accepting of new forms of healing.

William Harvey

Some of their company in this arbitrary attack on new ideas was the English physician William Harvey. Harvey posed the idea that blood flows from the heart through capillaries to the veins and back again. The medical profession, at that time, disagreed with this theory, and even destroyed his laboratory and data. Harvey was later proven right in his theory.

Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur’s theories were dismissed and he was ridiculed by medical society, and once again his advances and ideas were correct and later adopted by the same community that disagreed with him.

Victor Semmelweiss

At a time when hospitals were plagued by a disease called childbed fever, which killed thousands of newborns and mothers, Victor Semmelweiss, a Hungarian physician, was in charge of the obstetrical wing of a large hospital. Semmelweiss attributed this disease to the physicians themselves. He contended that many physicians would perform autopsies and then perform pelvic examinations on the expectant mothers, failing to wash and sterilize their hands in between procedures.  The medical community was outraged that they were being accused of causing a disease. The department head of the hospital issued an order that hands be washed prior to pelvic examinations and the disease all but disappeared. Semmelweiss was blacklisted and his contract was not renewed, even though his determinations were correct. He died in a mental hospital, a broken man, after a lifetime of being ostracized and ridiculed. Today he is hailed as a genius.

Committee on Quackery

In 1964 the medical community formed a secret committee to try and destroy the chiropractic profession. It was known as the “Committee on Quackery”. An unknown informant who refereed to himself as “soar throat” leaked their documents to the press and IRS. It was revealed that this committee had hired writers to write anti-chiropractic articles to ruin the chiropractic profession.

Lawsuits

In 1976 several chiropractors filed lawsuits against the A.M.A. in federal court. They charged that the A.M.A. was in violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and was practicing unlawful restraint. Within a year there had been numerous lawsuits against the A.M.A. filed all over the United States. Because of this legal pressure the “Committee on Quackery” was disbanded and the A.M.A. began to revise its position on chiropractic. In 1987 U.S. District Court Judge Susan Getzendanner found the A.M.A. guilty of conspiracy to destroy the chiropractic profession. The A.M.A. tried to appeal the case in U.S. Supreme Court in 1990 and the court refused to even hear the case. Since that time it has been revealed that many physicians were also attempting to utilize chiropractic with their patients. These doctors were performing adjustments in secret for fear of being attacked by their own peers.
