Diet May Trigger
Asthma
Rates of childhood asthma have rocketed in recent years. According
to a report in the August issue of the journal Thorax, this jump
may be due — at least in part — to fast-food, high-fat
diets.
The study enrolled 974 children, aged 3 to 5 years, who lived in
two rural regions of Australia with contrasting climates (one dry,
one humid). Parents of the subjects completed questionnaires detailing
risk factors of asthma, diet and history of breastfeeding. In addition,
650 subjects underwent skin prick tests to assess their response
to common allergens including dust mite, egg, cow’s milk and
rye grass.
Results showed that roughly one in five children had asthma. A
diet high in polyunsaturated fat (usually from margarine and foods
fried in polyunsaturated vegetable oils) more than doubled a subject’s
risk of asthma, accounting for up to 17% of cases. Children with
an allergic response to one or more components of the skin prick
test were nearly 2.5 times more likely to have recent asthma than
children with a negative test. A parent with asthma doubled the risk
and a serious respiratory infection before the age of 2 years bolstered
the risk by 93%. Three or more older siblings and early breastfeeding
conferred protection. Not breastfeeding accounted for 16% of asthma
cases, the authors estimate.
Don’t gamble with a child’s health. Chiropractic care
has been proven to improve the function of the human spine and the
nervous system within. Asthma is often a result of interference of
the nervous system and thereby can be directly improved by Chiropractic
care and improved diet. Encourage the practice of a Chiropractic “check-up” of
children you care about. There is no-charge for this service within
our office.
