Headaches and Pills

When I speak to a person about this subject, I am always amazed at how people have accepted this potentially dangerous condition in their bodies...or how they justify why they have them.

The physical aspect of a headache is something impressive. IF you really look at it as what it truly is-it's pain in your brain. With over 50 million people in the United States suffering from Headaches, it has become one of the most common and most disturbing health conditions.

When asked how often a person is suffering from their headaches, I hear numbers that range from daily, to several times a week, to once a month. Although the numbers vary, the person usually does have disclaimers such as; "it's only when I've had a bad day", "not too bad, just usually when I have to study too much for class", "when the kids are home", and just way too many other "justifications" for a condition that literally should NEVER occur.

Think about it, if you were getting pains in your chest once a month, or whenever you were under stress, would you go to a doctor and get checked out? Would you have this monthly chest pain assessed, never mind if it was happening a few times a week...or even daily-or would you just say-"it's from stress, I'll just take something to mask the pain"?

Headaches come from one cause in 9 out of 10 cases, tense paraspinal muscles surrounding the neck. The increased tension in the neck muscles irritates the spinal nerves in the upper cervical spine (also known as Tension Headaches).

Also, in your neck, the vertebral arteries pass through the vertebra on their way up to the brain. Misalignments in the neck can impair the blood supply to the brain, further contributing to the headaches.

This is why by correcting the spinal misalignments through a Chiropractic adjustment, we can so effectively eliminate the headaches.

For those of you who have come into our office with a headache, you know just how powerful an adjustment is and what an impact it can make on the headache-all without the use of potentially dangerous drugs.

Narcotic prescriptions common, but useless, for headaches

In recent years, it has become more "acceptable" among medical doctors to prescribe narcotics to patients with difficult-to-treat pain.

However, a new study has found that the vast majority of people with severe chronic headaches do not benefit from the powerful drugs.

The results of the five-year study were presented during a special session at the 42nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society (AHS).

Joel R. Saper, M.D., director of the Michigan Head-Pain & Neurological Institute, Ann Arbor, said that daily doses of narcotics may be appropriate for some terminally ill patients.

"However," he cautioned, "before we aggressively prescribe these potentially dangerous medicines to more and more patients with difficult headache problems, we must first establish proper guidelines for prescribing narcotics and develop standards to appropriately monitor treatment and patients' use of the drugs."

Too many doctors turn to narcotics without trying less radical treatments.

"During the past several years at our center, we have evaluated an increasingly large number of headache patients who have been prescribed daily narcotic treatment," Dr. Saper pointed out, "often in self-injected forms, long before more appropriate treatments were tried."

The study showed that approximately 75% of those prescribed narcotics failed to benefit from taking the medications regularly -- and some people's headaches actually appeared to get worse.

The study followed 386 people, most of whom suffer from chronic daily headache, who had come to the Michigan Head-Pain & Neurological Institute after all other medications and treatments for their headaches had failed to bring satisfactory relief.
